How to Record Gameplay on Xbox, PlayStation & Switch

No capture card required. Every modern console can record gameplay out of the box, and once you know the right button, grabbing a clip takes a couple of seconds. Here is how to do it on Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.

Recording on Xbox

Xbox makes capture quick once you know where to look. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide, then choose the capture options to take a screenshot or record what just happened.

  • Screenshot: Grab the current frame from the capture menu.
  • Recent clip: Save the gameplay you just played, which is great for catching a moment after it happens.
  • Record from now: Start a fresh recording going forward.

Clips you record are saved to your console's storage. The maximum length for a clip can depend on whether it is saved to internal storage or external storage, with external storage generally allowing longer captures.

Getting clips off Xbox: Your captures live in the gallery, and you can upload them to your linked account or services so you can grab them from your phone or PC. From there it is easy to download and share them.

Recording on PlayStation

PlayStation centers everything around one button. Press the Create button on your DualSense controller to open the capture menu.

  • Screenshot: Take a still image of the action.
  • Save recent gameplay: Save the footage leading up to now, since your console is buffering recent play in the background.
  • Start new recording: Begin recording from this moment forward.

You can also customize how the Create button behaves, for example assigning a single press to instantly save a screenshot or recent clip. Captures are stored in your console's media gallery.

Getting clips off PlayStation: Use the gallery to review your captures, then share them to a linked account or copy them to a USB drive. Many players link the mobile app so clips sync to their phone automatically, making it simple to download and re-share.

Recording on Nintendo Switch

The Switch keeps it wonderfully simple with one dedicated button on the left Joy-Con.

  • Screenshot: Press the Capture button to grab a still image.
  • Video clip: Hold the Capture button to save the last ~30 seconds of gameplay.

That 30-second buffer is the key thing to remember: the Switch is always quietly recording the recent past, so hold the button right after something cool happens. Note that not every game supports video capture, though screenshots are widely available.

Getting clips off Switch: Open the Album from the home menu to view your captures. From there you can share directly to social accounts, send to a smart device using the on-screen QR code, or transfer to a computer using a USB connection.

Tips for Better Console Clips

  • Learn the recent-clip feature. The best plays are unscripted, so being able to save what just happened is gold.
  • Clean up storage. Captures add up fast, so move keepers off the console and delete the rest.
  • Transfer in the highest quality available. When you have the choice, keep the original file rather than a recompressed version.

Once your clip is on your phone or PC, it is ready for an audience. Browse the Explore feed on FragClips to see what other console players are sharing, or jump to the game pages for your title.

Caught a clutch moment? Get it off your console and onto the upload page to share it with the community.
